Abstract:This study investigates the comparative effectiveness of traditional rote memorization versus cognitively engaged interactive strategies in English vocabulary acquisition. While prior research often conflates mechanical repetition with superficially modified techniques (e.g., digital flashcards), we redefine interactivity as methods requiring active cognitive participation, multisensory integration, and social or contextual engagement. Through a synthesis of 8 empirical studies, we demonstrate that three strategies—mnemonic keyword generation, collaborative story chains, and spaced retrieval with self-testing—consistently outperform rote methods in both short-term retention and long-term recall. Crucially, we argue that the critical distinction lies not in technological novelty (e.g., paper vs. digital flashcards) but in the learner’s cognitive agency: even “traditional” tools like physical vocabulary cards become interactive when paired with spaced self-quizzing protocols. Results further reveal that interactive methods significantly enhance learner motivation and reduce anxiety, particularly among special education populations where animated media increased vocabulary mastery by 22%. The findings urge educators to prioritize engagement depth over superficial method categorization, providing a framework to distinguish transformative interactivity from incremental adaptations of rote paradigms.
